A WINE BY ANY OTHER NAME.
FRENCH PROTEST TO 4ESTRALIA. C'L , « 1S K: ; i(i n . ot t0 be the case. thTt O e \'!% U 'r n in .Australia, noted that the Australian wines were named S rCnch , wmcs . such as Champagnes Burgundy, Bordeaux, etc., and it is understood that Franco has officially protested against the use of such names tv Australian wine-makers, as not being morally a fair thing to the proclucers of the wines m the districts from which the wanes take their names. One proposition to get over the difficulty in Australia is to coin some new names for wines by taking the first syllable only from the original names and rddbbe affix - alia.” It is pointed out that such a proposal would not only afford a, good alias, hut would advertise Australia. Thus champagne would be ehampaha ; hungundy, bnrgalia; claret, claniha; bordeaux, bordalia; muscadine muscaha. and so on. i si ibjcct the last number of trade and Commerce Notes” says; ” A Bill to confine the nomenclature ol certain goods—particularly wines champagne, burgundy, and bordeaux—to the geographical regions originally responsible for them is under discussion m . the French Chamber. It is maintained that the excellence of wines originating from certain French districts has encouraged other countries to adopt well-known French names for their wines. As the names, in the first instance, served as marks of origin, it is felt that much false description of wines has entered into the wine trade. The Bill,, if carried, will nrovent the sale of wines m France which offend against its provisions, although it will not afi6ct the such sales .of foreign \rines m foreign markets. In order to pievide against the latter it would be necessary for France to enter into a series of international agreements.”
