THE RUSSIAN CAMPAIGN.
VARYING FORTUNES. By Telegraph—Press A*Bod»tioD—Copyright. Australian and N.Z. Cable Association. (Received September 26, 2.10 p.m.) LONDON, September 25. It is now stated that though the British are evacuating the Caucasus a detachment will be temporarily retained at Batoum province. The Bolsheviks continue to advance against General Petloura, and have occupied Jitomir. The retreat of the Ukrainians from the Jitomir area opened a way of escape for the Bolsheviks imprisoned there by General Denikin’s occupation of Kiev. General Denikin continues his successes along the whole front, and has occupied Shilingri, north-east of Kursk.. Admiral Koltchak’s dffensire has advanced within thirty-five miles of Kurgan. He has advanced his whole front an average of fifty miles. Except north of Tobolsk the Bolsheviks are encountering little opposition in Turkestan and probably they will be able to consolidate their gains, but the Uralsk Cossacks have begun a strong advance on Uralsk, and are now within fifteen miles of the town.
