Compigne (Ashburton) is staying at the Clarendon. Sire H. Reeve has returned to Wanganui from Christchurch. Mrs Cargill, Granmer ' Square, ia visiting Sire 8. B. Cargill, Nelson. Alisa _ Townshend has returned to Blenheim after a holiday spent in Christchurch. Sister Porter arrived in Christchurch last evening from Dunedin, and 1 is staying at the Clarendon. Aliss Dorothy Audorson has gone to 'Auckland to take part in the ladies' golf tournament there. Airs Jack Oracroft ’Wilson is coming hack to ‘New Zealand shortly after hav r ing been in England for several years. Airs Hatnber returned to Christchurch yesterday after spending three weeks at Ethelton with her daughter. Airs O. G reemvood. Airs Kineton Parkes is visiting Auckland. She and Miss Louise Alack were guests of honour at an “At Homo” given by Airs Alaguire. Airs T. G. Blakely left lasi night for AVd ling ton to meet her nephew. Lieutenant Donald H. Donaldson, N.Z.S.C., who is returning by the Ta.inui. Airs H. O. Bowron (Timaru) is visiting Christchurch. Hex husband leaves Christchurch to-day for Australia, and during his absence Mrs Bowron will spend part of her time in Christchurch. The marriage of Aliss Alys GowerBurns to I/ieutenant Kenneth AlilnerHarris has been arranged to take place at “Staple Gurr ’’ rectory. Taunton, kSomcrsct, on Friday September 26, 1919. Airs H. Cotterill, Aliss Betty Cottcrill and Air Guy Cottcrill. who went to Wellingtbon to meet Alajor L. D. Cotterill. who returned to New Zealand by the Corinthic after several years abroad on, active service, returned to Christchurch yesterday, accompanied by Alajor Cotterill. The marriage has been arranged, :,nd will shortly take .place (October 7) between Aliss Oth lie Bean, daughter of the Rev Canon and Airs Bean, Addington, and Captain John D. Al’Arthur, son of Mr and Mrs J. AT Arthur, Lumsden, Southland. Last week the soldiers of Ward 2 in the Chalmers Hospital gave Airs Cordner a silver bonbon dish as a slight appreciation of the way in which she had visited the ward and kept it fresn and dainty with flowers. Alajor Ulrich, on behalf of the Orthopaedic patients in that ward, made the presentation, and wished Mrs Cordncr a very happy holiday abroad. News has been received of the death in England of Airs Ellen Jones, formerly a resident of Christchurch, at the age of sixty-seven years. The late Airs Jones came to New Zealand with her first husband, Air Brown, by the ship Duke of Edinburgh, in 1873,“ when she established in a small way a laundry which subsequently developed into a prosperous business “ in ' Christchurch. She retired in 1890, and returned _to England, where she resided np till the time of her death. ' She is survived by one son,' Air AVilliam Brown, of Christchurch.

~A , VCr T Peasant dance was held on Monday evening in the Cashmere Hall, uhen Aims Dorothy Page entertained a number of her friends. The hall was // effectively decorated with garlands of red roses and greenerv. A few musical items were given/' and dancing was indulged in until the early hours of the morning. Mrs Pams wore a black taffeta and georgette frock, and Miss Page a shell pink tafe a and silver net. • Amongst - those present were Mr and Airs Monies,. Mr Ami Mr and Airs M Dantt, Misses I. and K.
