. The movement which has as its object the deepening of the river Avon m the vicinity of the Public Gardena was referred to this morning by a gentleman who has taken a keen interest in the matter for manv Tears. Ho remarked that the City Council had in its possession a sum of £SOO. subscribed by means of a fete for river improvement purposes, and ho thought that immediate steps should be taken with a view to carrying out the work. Instead of a dam, which might lead to flooding, he suggested the erection near the Montreal Street bridge of a water gate which could be lifted at night. This would he sure to increase the depth of the water and so make the river more suitable for boating purposes.
