Mi 1 W. H Farrant, the cook, reached the haven <rf refuge in Gore Bay scantily clad, but kind settlers attended to mm until Mr Needham could find a, complete outfit of clothing for him, and set him on his way homeward to Wanganui. He came down to Christchurch last evening, and lias made a wonderini recovery from his norve-straining ordeal. He will proceed homeward to ” auga.mn as soon as possible. The five bodies recovered' so far will bo brought down to Christchurch bv tram to-day, to be handed over to undertakers, acting on instructions from the relatives of the deceased. It is understood that the bodies of the men who resided at Wanganui or Wellington will be sent to their respective homes for burial. ..The opinion has been expressed that H it had been possible for the Tainui’s crew to have stood the heat and remamed on the vessel, instead of taking to the lifeboat, they would have stood a better chance of saving their JivesCue early eye-witness of the ' wreck after it had drifted to shore, says that lfc was not then burning aft. There is no direct evidence to show whether the explosion of the benzine cargo was a result of fire on the ship or if a fire caused the explosion. When tho only survivor was awakened as a result of one explosion, fire was then belching from one of the fore-hatch covers. It was noticed in daylight however, that one of the victims was scorched about the face and head.
