HARBOUR BOARD.
TO-DAY’S MEETING. The Lyttelton Harbour Board met this morning; present—Messrs H. B. Sorensen (chairman), F. Horrell, F. Store} 7 . T. I). Boag, R. Galbraith, H. Holland, W. J. Walter, S- K. Sleigh, J. Flood and T. A. Blackley. ENGINEER’S REPORT. The engineer’s monthly report stated that the dredge Canterbury had been engaged deepening and maintaining the depths in the outer channel and the open parts of the inner harbour, and had lifted a total quantity of 10)9,640 I tons, of which 101,456 tons were taken from the outer channel and 8190 tons from the inner harbour. The whole quantity had been pumped into tho reclamation area. The grab dredge Tewhaka had been engaged at Nojetty east and the Gladstone Pier, and had lifted and deposited at sea a quantity of 4480 tons. The reclamation mole had been raised to its full permanent height for a distance of 1858 feet from Baker’s Point. The report was adopted. HARBOUR IMPROVEMENT. The Harbour Improvement Committee reported that it had decided to take no action in regard to the Waterside Workers’ Union’s request for a telephone at the Coronation Hall. The committee, however, recommended that the board instal a combined lava tory and urinal at the east end of Coronation Hall. With reference to Messrs D. and S Sinclair’s application to lease a site near the dock for engineering works, the committee stated that, after careful consideration of a plan and upset prices, they had arranged for the available leases to bo offered at public auction in accordance with the Harbours Act; the period to be twenty-one years. The committee had no recommendation to make concerning the City Council’s letter proposing a conference of local authorities within the harbour district regarding improvement of communication between Christchurch and the sea. The report was adoptedAir Horrell explained that the Progress League had the matter in hand, and as the hoard was represented on the league it was not necessary to go on with the City Council’s proposal. VISIT OF H.M.S. NEW ZEALAND. The chairman, in his report, touched upon the arrival of H.M.S. New Zealand, and the part which members of the board took in the function. Mr Holland expressed his appreciation of the smooth manner in which the board’s arrangements in connection with the arrival and berthing of H-M S New Zealand had worked. On his motion, seconded by Mr Sleigh, n motion of thanks to the board’s staff was unanimously carried. SAILORS’ HOME COMMITTEE. The Sailors’ Home Committee reported having passed for payment accounts amounting to £79 4s 10d- Earnings amounted to £7B 19s 6d, and the expenditure to £79 19s KM. the dehit balance being £1 Os 4d. The average number of men hoarded per day was fourteen. The maximum was eighteen amt the minimum thirteen. The average for the corresponding month in 1918 was seven, FINANCE COMMITTEEThe Finance Committee recommended accounts counting to The report was adopted.
