MR RUSSELL ASKS FOR RETURNS. [From Otjr CoBBESrONDENT.] W ELLINGTON, September 2. Mr Russell, ex-Minister of Internal Affairs, has commenced to take an active interest in parliamentary affairs from an Opposition point of view. Today ho gave notice to move for several important returns. One sought details of the expenditure of £430,917, charges “ c ! f Penses on ioans during the financial year 1918-19, showing the sums, if anj, Paid to the Imperial Government, anti the names of persons or firms to whom payments were made in excess of The member for Avon also gave notice to move for a return showing the exact nature of the arrangements made with the Imperial Government for the of meat, wool and other produce, the date on which each arrangement expires, the specific purpose for which ,each arrangement was made, and whether it is true, as stated publicly, that meat purchased by the Imperial Government and not required for military purposes has been sold to meat rings anc \ ratuiJed at an enormous advance on New Zealand prices. Another question to which Mr Russell wants an answer concerns the High Gommissionership. He desires the Prime Minister to say, in view of the expiry of the High Commissioner’s present term of office on October 22. whether he will announce the Government’s intention respecting it. was it contemplated appointing a resident Commissioner in Loudon in addition to the High Commissioner, and . was it intended to reappoint Sir Thomas Mackenzie for the full period of three years?.
