SECONDARY SCHOOLS.
* ASSISTANTS’ ASSOCIATION. [Pan Press Association.] WELLINGTON, September 2. The sixth annual conference of the New Zealand Secondary Schools Assistants’ Association -was opened to-day. The chairman, Mr T. H. Campbell, of I>unedin, said he was pleased to bo able to state that the educational authorities were beginning to realise that the conditions, status and pay in connection with secondary schools were in need of alteration. He was not, aware what effect the split in the Government would have, bub lie understood that the Minister of Education had’ drawn up a scheme which would probably give satisfaction to secondary schools assistants. Mr F. ML- Renner, of Wellington College, who was re-elected secretary and treasurer, said the ultimate aim ot the association should be to bring about the nationalisation of the secondary schools, even though that should necessitate the pooling of endowments. It might be said that only a small proportion of children from the primary schools went on to the secondary schools, but were those schools nationalised this objection could not be raised. Ho considered that a child of fourteen who left the primary school and went into the world was a distinct danger to society, for his mind was °P < m und fertile ground for the sowing of fake counsels. He (M r Renner) hrmly believed that a great dealof tho present unrest and dissatisfaction was largely due to the acceptance of such false counsels.
