DIAMONDS IN GOLD COAST.
* PANNING YIELDS 600. LONDON, August 12. An interesting discovery of diamonds was made in the Gold Coast, a British •protectorate, on the West African coast, in February. Stones occur in shallow quartz gravels near the village of Abomoso, sixty-five miles east ot Accra. The stones found are small, averaging- approximately thirty to the standard carat; and are mostly of good quality, clear and colourless. Many 3.re perfect crystals. In value they vary from 10s to 12s a carat for the smaller grade; 17s'6d a carat ■ for medium grade, and 30 s to ?, 2s d a- carat for the larger grade. This is for mixed samples, including ail qualities of stones. Some of the larger stones are worth 70s to 80s a carat. Upwards of 600 diamonds have been found merely by panning. Sufficient work has not yet been done to prove the economic value of the discovery.
