The Mayor has received word from Sir William Fraser to the effect that an authority fm fnrthei £d(X) has been issued for the Sumner R’oad deviation to enable the number of men employed to bo increased to thirtv or forty. Mr G. W. Forbes, M.P., left for Wellington last night to attend the final meetings of the Industries Committee. He will not come south before the sitting of Parliament. It is reported on good authority that a. well-known Christchurch business man has bought four acres of land at Marshland, facing the main road, between the public hall and the Methodist Church property, and intends to present it to the district for a recreation ground- It is probable that a- monument to the memory ot la-1 leu soldiers will he erected there later on.
