FIRE BOARD.

WOOLSTON. .Che Woo]bton Fire Board met last eveupresent—Messrs C. Hill (chairman), J. J. Graham, F. A. Tapson, H. G. Batchelor, J. D. A. Martin, L. M. Hart and J. C. Hobson. Accounts amounting to £l2 12a Sd were passed lor payment. The chairman said that the special committee which had been set up to go into the question of providing better plant had decided to write to the Christchurch Fire Board and ask it to quote a price for a motor pumping engine. The committee had that night received s lengthy report from the Christchurch Board, dealing with the question of fire prevention in the borough of Woolston, and he considered that it should be discussed in committee. The board then went into committee to consider the report. On resuming in open board, it was reported that it had been decided that each member of the beard should be supplied with a copy of the report, that the special committee appointed should meet the delegates of the Christchurch Fire Board and discuss the position with them, and that the chairman should call another meeting at an early date. ’The chairman reported that he had made inquiries regarding the cost of installing a siren at the fire station, and had ascertained that it would amount to about £SO, which he considered too high. The board , did not take any further action in regard to the matter. The superintendent reported that since the last meeting of the board two alarms had been received by the brigade, and both had proved to be false alarms. The present strength of the brigade was eight firemen and two messengers. ... Mr Martin asked what was the work o! the messengers. ■ Mr Graham replied that the messengers had been found very useful in going around and calling up the members of. the brigade,and also gave assistance at fires. They remained about the station in the and went any messages which were t<> quired. The board decided to make an annual grant to the messengers of 30s. The chairman said that in addition to the eight firemen, the brigade i consisted of a superintendent and deputy-superintendent, which was the full strength allowed.
