LAWN TENNIS.
BOSTON,, NATIONAL TOURNAMENT. NEW YORK, August 12. The “ New York Times ” Boston correspondent reports that the second round of the National Doubles on August 12, in which Patterson and Brookes defeated Williams and Washburn, arid Alexander and Vosbell defeated Lyostt and Thomas, brought out tho fact that Patterson, who is one of tho most brilliant players seen in American courts, needs the steadiness of Brookes to make his game effective. Brookes remained cool and calculating, often making phenomenal recoveries. Both men played fast and "brilliant tennis, and met strong though ineffective opposition. Their opponents, Lyoett and Thomas, gave them the* hardest play of their Jives. The Australasians were completely outplayed by Alexander and Vosheil in two of the five sete. The Americans found Thomas’s service excessively hard to handle.
