CHAMBER OF COMMERCE.

A meeting of the council of the Canterbury Chamber of Commerce was held yesterday afternoon. Mr P. Davidson (president) in the chair. A telegram was received from the Marlborough Railway League Asking the chamber to receive a deputation on Friday next. It was decided to accede to the request, the time to be arranged.

The report of the Joint Committee from the chamber and the Industrial Association on the matter of appointment of a Minister of Industries ana Commerce, was submitted, and it was resolved that it should be circulated among the members.

The Union Steam Ship ’Company wrote in reply in connection with the service between Grey month and Lyttelton. that when the ships used for war purposes are restored it would be possible to provide more steamers if the amount of cargo warranted it. It would be advantageous to have as much storage accommodation for coal at the ports, of shipment as possibleA letter was received from the general manager of the Tourist Department stating that the editor of the “Architectural Review ” of New York would publish an article on the subject of buildings in New Zealand if photographs were supplied, and it was decided to make inquiries as to obtaining photographs. _ His.Majesty’s Trade Commissioner in New Zealand wrote stating that the British. Industries Fair would he held from February 23 to March 5. 1020. simultaneously in London, Birmingham and Glasgow. Participation was confined to British manufacturing firms in the_ British Empire- It was not an exhibition in the ordinary, sense of the word, hut trade fairs, to which admittance was restricted to ,honn fide trade buyers, and admission would be hv invitation. The London fair would he held in the Crvstal PalaceThe Moving Picture Exhibition of British Industries, Ltd., wrote that a world tour had been arranged for the purpose of expansion of British trade, the exhibition consisting of films illustrating leading British manufactures, and asked for assistance in arranging for the exhibition of pictures. The Kaikonra Roads and Bridges League wrote asking support in urging the Government to provide better communication by road with the Canterbury markets. It was decided to support the league. A letter was received suggesting that three petrol electric railway vehicles-at present laid up in Wellington he put in commission in Canterbury. It was decided to refer the matter to the District Traffic Ma.ira.ger of Railways.
