TAYLOR’S MISTAKE.

TO THE EDITOR. Sir,—Your correspondent “J.L.W.” was able to refer to the second volume of the Southern Provinces Almanac which continued from 1853 to 1891— thirty-eight years. I have heard there *is somewhere a file of this almanac, which would be interesting in the Public Library for reference. I find I have in the first volume for the year 1858 a calculation for the meridian of Lyttelton, published in the same way a's the second volume which “ J.L.W.’’ has in his possession. And I am interested in finding in the Coastal Sailing Directions the extract which “ J.L.W.” has quoted as to Vincent's or Taylor's Mistake. I. too, would like to know more of the twain. In the preface to my almanac of 1853 it is statedthat assistance was given in its compilation as to tlnj Coasting Directory by Mr E. Jerningham Wakefield- Mr J. Thomas, accompanied by surveyors and labourers, arrived at Port Cooper on July 3. 1849, and they, with the commander of H.M.vS. Acheron, who arrived with Mr Godley on board at Lyttelton in November, 1850, I ssume made an inspection of the west, north _ and south bf Port Lyttelton, and assigned to them pertain names. This report of their turveys would form the foundation of Ir Wakefield’s article in the almanac, ■feud thus before the pilgrims arrived in 13850 may it not have been possible that (Vincent and Taylor had entered the partnership in the Mistake? ?
