He asked whether the board gave preference to returned soldiers. - The chairman stated that this was the ■ fixed policy of the hoard, but it could , not take on any returned sbldjera, re- ■ gardless of capability. In any case there was no record of an application oy the writer of the letter. Previously ■ a returned soldier had applied for a signalman’s job, for which a married - man was absolutely necessary, and ''on Ins declaration that.be was* about to - be married he was given the job. Late he came hack and said that he could not come to terms with the girl, land ’ consequently the thing “ fizzled out but the board had got him another ' job. .■■■■■: ■ .> ■■■■■. A deputation from, the Waterside' Workers Union, .consisting of Messrs E. G. Langley and Shirley, waited on -- the Lyttelton Harbour rioard to-day-with a request that a telephone should 1 £ installed principally for the purpose ; ’ - - of allowing communication between the . ’ men and their homes. Mr Shirley ‘ stated that in two years there had been fifty-five accidents in connection with ■' the railways branch, and he was always -. asking for the use of the railway tele- - phone to communicate with the men’s' ' families.
