THE KOWHAI’S STRANDING.

[Per Press Association.] • •WELLINGTON, August 4. A magisterial inquiry into the stranding of the Union Company’s Kowhai at Farewell Spit on June 9 was opened today. The captain stated that if the course given by him liad’ been followed, it would have been impossible for the vessel to go ashore- A fresh wind was blowing at the time and a, rough sea was running. On an instruction from the master, the chief officer made an alteration in tho course shortly before the vessel struck.
