FIGHT IN AMERICAN SENATE.
NEAV YORK, July 15 (delayed). Ilie "Washington correspondent of the 1 New York Times” states that with the return oF President Wilson the fijrht in the Senate over the adoption ot the Treaty with the League Covenant has come to a..head. The issue seems to be divided strictly on party lines. The Republicans claim that i-hev have a majority sufficient to defeat the adoption, which requires a two-thirds vote. The Democrats claim that the Republicans will not dare to defeat the League, which .has the support ’of the peonlo. The Republicans arc concentrating all their efforts to- secure certain reservations in the Covenant, especially the. danse dealing with the Monroe Doctrine, and Article 10. A small fraction of prominent Republican senators have entered a protest against the Shantung; settlementSenator Johnston, a Republican, introduced a resolution requesting the State Department to supnlv the Foreign Relations Committee with the stenographic report of all the secret proceedings at the Peace Conference. THE AUSTRIAN TERMS. ... PARIS. .Inly 20.the economic clauses of the Austrian Treaty have been modified. The Austrian army is limited to thirty .sandThe Austrians have been handed the complete Treaty. They will be allowed fifteen clays for a reply. The complete Austrian Treaty, as presented to Dr Karl Renner on Sunday, contains several new clauses, together with modifications of the original draft. It is pointed out that the text embodies replies to various Austrian Notes. A reply is demanded witliin ten days. The Austrian Treaty assigns to Austria territories within Czecho-Slovakia and Hungary inhabited by a Germanspeaking population; abolishes conscription and restricts the manufacture of war material to a single State-controlled factory. Tlie additional clauses of the Treaty mainly concern reparation, the amount ol damage and the period for payment, and are similar to those in the German 'Treaty. Austria- is asked to surrender shipping on a ton for ton basis within two months, and also must be prepared within sixty days to supply lists qf ■ animals, machinery, and so forth, for ! the replacement of similar goods' do- : stroyed by Austria, who surrenders historical and artistic material taken from invaded territory. Three jurists shall determine what pronerty was taken illegally by the Hapsburg and other dynasties from Italy, Belgium, Poland and Czecho-Slovakia. THE-BULGARIAN TREATY.
