Yesterday the Ashburton police made an arrest at Winslow in connection with the case of a man who has been wanted at To Kuiti since 1916, on warrant, in default of payment of a fine for sly grog-soiling. Stokes gave notice of motion at the meeting of tho Riccarton Borough Council last evening that tho name of Matai Street should be substituted for that portion of Railway Terrace running east and west from tho north railway lino to Deans Avenue, thereby continuing Matai Street right on from StraVen Street across the north railway lino to Deans Avonuo, and also that that part of Matai Street running north and south from the main portion of Matai Street to Stafford Street and parallel with the north railway line should be called Monavale Avenue. Tho Canterbury Women’s Institute has passed the following resolutions: — (1) Tho Canterbury Women’s Institute urges upon the Government the immediate release of all conscientious objectors to military service still in prison(2) In view of statements made by the Minister of Defence and tho Minister of Justice that all C.O.’s arc isolated from ordinary criminals and segregated in prison camps, the Canterbury Women’s institute, asks that conscientious objectors now in tho common criminal prison at Mount Eden shall be placed with other C.O.’s on a prison farm, pending tho general release of all such prisoners. A public meeting will be held in tbo Richmond Methodist Schoolroom tomorrow evening, at eight o’clock, to discuss tho housing problem and townplanning scheme. Tho Mayor (Dr Thacker) and Councillors H. F- Herbert and D. G. Sullivan will be tho speakers. It is intended to set up a committee in the Richmond district to report concerning the housing conditions in the district, the number of houses required in tne district, tho position in regard to open spaces and ns to what open spaces are still available in the district for acquisition and what should bo acquired, and generally on what might be done to beautify the 1 district, Tho Mayor of Riccarton (Mr A. D. Ford), at the meeting of the Borongu Council last evening, reported upon the work dono at the Town-Planning Conference in Wellington, and a hearty vote of thanks was passed to him. Councillors George, Barrell.and Stokes spoke to the motion, the opinion being expressed that some active movement should be started in Riccarton, in tho way of workers’ _ dwellings, or in some other suitable direction. On the motion of Councillors Steer© and Stokes, it was decided that the council should form itself into a committee for townplanning purposes, with power to add, the Mayor being empowered to take any necessary steps to call a meeting. A Press Association telegram states that, speaking at Lower Hutt last night the Rev Howard Elliott made reference to criticisms by Returned Soldiers’ Associations telegraphed from various towns based upon remarks attributed to him in an address at Woodville- He said he was made to assert that Roman Catholics were running and controlling the Returned Soldiers’ Association. Members were indignant, and they had reason, for he never made any such statement. Air Elliott said that what he did say was that Catholics, have been put into important positions in the association and that Protestants must see that their interests are not interfered with by this. A Press Association message frorm Auckland states that at a special meeting of the New Zealand Insurance Company yesterday it was decided to alter the Articles of Association by the insertion of a clause that reads as follows :— 11 38a—The company may (a) divide its capital, or any part thereof, by subdivision of its existing shares, or any of them, into shares of smaller amount than is fixed by its memorandum of association; (b) consolidate and divide its capital, or any part thereof, into shares of larger amount than its existing shares.” The resolution will be submitted for confirmation at tho second extraordinary general meeting to be convened subsequently. The question of the cutting down of the trees on the northern side of tho domain alongside the Riccarton Road, was brought before the Riccarton Borough Council meeting last evening by Councillor Georae. who said that he would move a motion on the subject to test the feeling of the council.. During the past four or five years, he said, tho curator, a very excellent man, had shown a tendency to cut down the tall trees and plant shrubs. In this connection he did not think there was any need for those trees to be cj.it down along the Riccarton Road. He moved —“That the Domain Board he asked to obtain tho opinion of the various contributing bodies before felling trees fronting public thoroughfares.” Councillor Stokes seconded the motion, which was carried. At the Ashburton Borough Council meeting on Monday night, a letter was received from Senior-Sergeant Ryan, reporting that on June 7 five men were before the Court for drunkenness. They had been having a drunken carouse at a hut occupied by a man on the riverbed- The matter had been commented upon by the presiding Justice, who had requested that tho cases should he brought under the notice of the Borough Council. Councillor Watt said that, in addition to tho five men before the Court, there were four others who wore also drunk, hut could not he got into the vehicle which was to convey them to the lock-up. None of them were old-age pensioners. He moved that the two principal offenders, who occupied huts in the river-bed, be given fourteen days’ notice that they would not be allowed to occupy the lints.
