Mra "Wheeler (Foilding) is the guest W Mrs Herbert Hill. Miss Mackay (Mastcrton) ,Ja the guest t)f Mrs Pearson, Mansfield Avenue. Mrs Murphjr and the blisses Murphy (Timaru) are in town. The Hon J. A. Hanan and Mrs Hanan (Wellington) are staying at the Clarendon. Mr and Mrs Rishworfch (Lower Hntt) leave Christchurch this evening for the porth after spending a holiday here. Mra A. H. Blasted has gone to Wellington to see her son, Mr J. Briabed, of the Eastern Extension Cable Company, who will leave New Zealand shortly for Australia. Mr and Mrs W. Burnett (Mount Stewart, Otago), Miss Olivo Burnett end Mrs C. M. Statham have come to Christchurch to attend the wedding of Miss Dorothy Dalgoty to Manor Gorton. ■ A very happy birthday party wan .given yesterday by Mra Nedwill for her eon Richard and ids friends. The table was laden with good things such an children love, and included a birthday cake, hon hons galore, and a, toy for each, small guest. The table was prettily decorated with scarlet geraniums and white chrysanthemums. The grownups, mostly mothers whoso children wore there, included Mrs Alpers, Mra Gresson, Mrs Killian, Mrs Courage Mrs Wilford, Sirs Scott, Mra Wood’ Mrs Savill and Mrs Barker. Miss Coleen. Macfarlane came into town, yesterday, and is staying at Warners. Mra Yiner (Invercargill) has been spending several days in Christchurch, on her way to tho North Island. Mias Florence C. Kernoban, of Forhury, Dunedin, nas been recommended and approved for tho position of assistant mistress at the Marshland School. She is at present on the staff of thaf Norsewood School, Havrke’s Bay. With tho cessation of hostilities and the return of many employees from the front to their old positions, several firms are reinstituting their annual socials and dances. Arrangements for Beath’s dance in the Art Gallery are now in train. The afternoon tea at tho 'Returned Soldiers Association’s rooms on Sunday was attended to by Mesdames Tomlinson and Turner, • and a musical programme was provided by the Lyric Orchestra and the Red Triangle Concert Party, assisted by Miss M’Davett and Messrs Bloy, Jones and Malcblm. A sale of home-made cakes, produce, sweets and flowers will be held in Cathedral Square to-moronv, the proceeds being devoted to Nurse Maude District Nursing Association. The following are the stall-holders -Flowers, Mrs R. Anderson, Mrs Oarey-Hill and Mrs L. M. Wilson: sweets, Mrs H. Wyatt and Mrs O. Bingham ; calces, Mrs J. S. Neville and Miss L. Harris. An. enjoyable social evening was held last Saturday at the residence of Mrs A. Spencer, Retreat Road, Avonside, to celebrate tho nineteenth birthday of her Annie. Those who contributed musical items were Mrs W. Arundel, blisses Brydcn, Thornton and Spencer, Messrs Gates, Jade, Walker and Arundel. Mr H. M’Caffery highly amused the company with bis humorous recitations- During the evening Mr H. Spencer took the opportunity of welcoming home on behalf of the company two soldiers, Messrs J. Joy and C. Johnson.
