An apology for absence, owing to illness, was received from Councillor Piercy. The Waihi Borough Council ‘wrote, asking for support to resolutions—(a) Payment of ii is a day to councillors whilst on public •duty; (b) that Saturday bo proclaimed a universal holiday. The former was received, but was unanimously objected to. It was agreed to support the latter, provided exemptious were given to seaside resorts and weekend centres. Sumner Fire Brigade wrote, inviting the Mayor and councillors to a social on June 11. Tho letter was received and the invitation accepted. Tho lessee of tho Town Hall, Mr A. W. Lane, wrote asking for a transfer of his license to Mr Hutchinson, who also wrote accepting tho terms. The application was granted. Mr W. S. Mitchell forwarded a complaint from Redcliffs residents annoyed by noises in the pipes, said to be due to the pumping. It was decided to ask tho engineer to report at tho next meeting. Tho secretary of the Sumner Bias's Band wrote, declining to supply the information asked for, and denying that the band was in any way a municipal band. The Mayor expressed surprise at the attitude the band had taken. He felt now that it was purely a private band. The town clerk stated that the council had spent £B7 19s 2d on the band lest year. The Mayor moved that £2O claimed be paid to the band. The question of the council’s relationship with tho band was referred to tho Finance Committee for a full report. In reference to an application received from the Fire Brigade for assistance in purchasing a motor hro engine, it was decided that the present time was an inopportune one to purchase such an engine. It was decided to appoint the borough engineer inspector of buildings under the Public Health Act. Tho council agreed to meet next Saturday afternoon to make the annual inspection of the borough. The Works Committee reported that it had placed a price upon the road toller, with a view to selling it and replacing it with a lighter one. A schedule of estimated expenditure- for the year was received and approved. It was decided that, as the general rate was proving insufficient, ev street lighting rale should be struck to produce £IOO. The town clerk’s statement, showing a comparison of estimates for 1918-19 and 1919-50, was received. It was resolved to call a public meeting to discuss Peace celebrations. AKAKOA. At tho fortnightly meeting of the Akaroa Borough Council there were present: Councillors Munro (depuly-Mayor, in the chair), Barnham, Lewitt, Davis, Piper, Paruham and Wilson. Tho Timaru Borough Council forwarded a report on the suction gas plant. Tho matter was referred to tho Lighting Committee. Councillor Leeto wrote, resigning hia seat on tho council. The resignation was scoop led. An application from tho fire brigade for a now flag was referred to the committeo, with power to act. Three applications for electric energy wero granted. Tho Works Committee recommended the purchase of a horse and dray. This was agreed to, as was the proposal to procure the County Council’s roller to roll the new metal in Balgncn Street. The financial statement showed receipts since last meeting to have been £32 18s. Accounts amounting to £l2O 2s lOd wore passed for payment. Councillor Dewitt reported having attended with Councillor Parnbam, the Lake Coleridge conference at Little River on Monday. Ho gave an account of the proceedings arid hoped the council would join the proposed power botird. A hearty vote of thanks was accorded {« the delegates. The assistant foreman was appointed ranger.
