The peculiar interest which America takes in the nows of the war with Germany lies in the fact that the United States is largely made up of Europeans and the children of Europeans. The <IOO,OOO English-born residents of the United States, the 1,352,000 Irishmen, and the 500,000 natives of Scotland' .and "Wales who reside there study with painful interest the situation in which Great Britain finds herself among the European Powers. There are 170,000 from' Belgium and the Netherlands who know' the strategic value of their* fatherlands and the German Imperial aspirations setting toward them. OP the natives of Germany there are) 2.501,000, of Austria-Hungary 1,671,000, of Russia 1,602,000, of France 117,000, and of Italy 1,343,000. Residents of the Unifed States from the nations that are engaged in the great war numbered at the last census 10,000,000 souls, op one-niuth of the whole American population.
