LAST YEAR’S BAD RECORD. [From Ocr Correspondent.] W ELLIiNGION, ju a 22, - Ihc year 1916 was not only a bad one from the point of view of the exceptionally large number of deaths which occurred in New Zealand, ; but it was notable for the great decrease in the number of births, the result being tlmt instead of the population showing a natuial increase of well over seTbnteen thousand—as it had done during the preceding ten years:—the 'natural increase was only 949 d.
