ACCLIMATISATION SOCIETY.
MEETING OF COUNCIL, A meeting: of the council of the North Canterbury Acclimatisation Society was held last evening, Mr it. It. Godby presiding over a largo attendance. The statement of receipts and expenditure, phoning a, credit balance of TIOO la, was adopted. The Minister of Internal Affair a wrote stating’ that by an Order-in-Council it was decided to protect stoats and weasels in tho Hunuiui district. Tho Minister of Marine forwarded information to the effect that tho question o£ repealing tho regulations regarding salmonfishing would be' considered when it was necessary to deal further with the matter. A good deal of discussion ensued on a letter which was received from tho Marino Department regarding the prohibiting of worm-fishing, and eventually it was decided that worm-fishing throughout the district should ho prohibited from tho opening of the season on October t for tho months of October and November, nnd that it should bo allowed thereafter. The Minister of Railways wrote acknowledging receipt of the society's letter regarding railway accommodation; tho Minister of Public Works acknowledged' receipt of tie society’s resolution regarding tho Otira tunnel; and tho Canterbury Progress League also wrote stating that, Hie league waa pleased to note tho society's support in tho mallets mentioned. On tho motion of Mr Iv. P. Stead, it was decided that the turning out of tho paradise ducks at present in tho gardens would bo left in tho hands of tho curator. Tho curator’s report staled that during tho past month the cleaning out of the rough growth round the grounds • had been proceeded with. The flu ruing from the big pond to the new hatchery had been commenced, and ho had now got it into position with two inches of water at tho intnko and sufficient. fall to carry it through. With the existing wells, the supply should be ample. All boxco and trays in both hnlehorico had been painted and were ready for use. The report was adopted.
