Hymestra may be A competitor in to-morrow’s race. The three-year-old pacer Locanda junior will not fulfil his engagement in the Kew,. Zealand Trotting Derby, to be decided at .the NeW Brighton Trot; ting Club’s* meeting in May. He has been under treatment by Mr H. Tinker for/teetli troubles, and it has been found nccessaryto give him a good spell. . The Australian-oWned pacer, Reggie Huon,.. Was shipped to Sydfaey, to-day. He showed great promise as a young horse, hut he developed bad manners later in his career, which spoilt hid rating prtbpebti. .. .One of' the brush fences at Riooarton has been put into order by the caretaker for the benefit of trainees who contemplate racing horses early in steeplechases. . Art hah got through a lot of useful pace -work lately. , He will probably he ra£ed over hurdles At Easter, after Which he will he schooled over the fences, though when previously tried he has shown a strong objection to the 'steeplechase course.' . Naupata has arrived from the North Island, where die has Wen spelling for some time, and he has gone into T. H. Gillett’s stable, tb he prepared for jumping events in the winter, Gillett Was .married last week, and he is at prceOnt spending a holiday in Akaroa. • Bore continues to ahoW signs of unSoundness, but .it does not appear to affect him greatly in jus woifk,. and' he may make a trip this month to Invercargill, where steeplechase engagements have been made for him. Glendower will' probably bfe a competitor at the Southland Racing Club 6 meeting this' month, his name figuring Among the nominations for the principal event each day. A sale of brood mares was held, at Napier on Friday, when the- following changed hands i-Goidea BaU jdam o Sweet Tipperary), by Po^ 1 Shot, Dwan. Brothers, by Gold Reef— Kilrdorey, J. H--2UgBJ LadyDelaval,bySeatonOeiavalEdith Curoton, J. M. Hams, 20& i Fpjv monft, J. H. Harris, 26gnj Marilla, by King Mark —Parula, JVL. Thomas, 37gs. B. M. Morris, with five wins, was the most successful rider at th© Nelson Jockey Club’s meeting last week, Esperauce (Martian— Mary of Avgyle), the full-sister to Mascot, scored Her first win in hack company -on the Second day of the Nelson, meeting. She is engaged in theWairarapa Gup this week. Intermezzo (Gay Spark—Prologue;, for shtn6 time trained at Trentham, is now in the charge of hef oWner, Mr A. Huddleston, at JJlenheim. , After the Marlborough meeting, the half-sister to Sihapis_wiU probably go into T. H, Gillett' s.iuccarton stable. Under ordinary circumstances Mr G. L. Stead would no doubt have been taking a team across' to Sydney in the spring. The most likely member of it would be Surveyor, the best two-year-old in the Dominion. Returning from Donnevirke, says “Sir Lancelot,”lwas informed by a friend recently back from Sydney that there was some error of omlssidn in the entry of Surveyor for the A.J.0.. Derby. To make siire, i looked through the entries of the A. J.O. Derby, 1019, but cannot find any in Mr G. L. Stead’s name, although he engaged four, including Surveyor, in the A.J.O. St Leger. This is rather an unfortunate omission, as had he trained on Surveyor might have added to the excellent record put up oy New ZealandOwned hOrses in the Australian Derby in recent years. The Wanganui Jockey Club has decided to build an up-to-date office, and with tnls object in view has purchased a « t« at the corner of Maria Place and St Hill Street. The site is a good one, and the buildings to be erected will be an ornament to vVanganui. The Gluten gelding Qhlciart won the Opotiki Cup from Alfa Laval and Pablo. In presenting the cup to the owner of the winner (Mr A. E. Watkins), the Hon W. D. 6. Mac Donald stated that the Opotiki Jockey Club had been' in existence for fifty-two years, and he was delighted to see the keen interest and excitement of-the spectators when there was no totalisator or bookmakers at the meeting. The win of the Auckland home Tenacious in the hurdle race at Te Aroha on Saturday was well carted. He has raced with consistent bad luck this season, haying been second five times and oiice third, without shoririg a win nrior to Saturday. The V aikato Hunt Club has received the necessary authority to hold a totalizator meeting at an early date. Probably the meeting will be aranged for some time in May. It i£ stitid th4t the English-bred mare Pennon hat most likOly run her last race, and will he put to the, stud. The daughter of Coriander and Eulogy hai always been a hard mare to train and was very sore on the second dav at Wanganui. A feature of the racing at the Hamilton Racing Club’s recent meeting W as the number of successes registered by horses bred in Australia.. On the opening day Tainifti (by The Nut-Lady Molly) won the Tnmahere Stakes, Rude (by Cyrus—Orceky) captured the Hamilton Cup, and Lord Kenilworth (by Kenilworth—Yandanganuig) won the Karaniu Welter Handicap. The second
first home in the Matangi Hurdle Rice. Arrowfleld (by Cardinal OolAreno) scored in. the To Kowhai Welter Handicap, and Spanner (by The Nnt—Dudu) closed the proceedings by winning the Farewell Handicap. The AustraTiftn-Jhred division is certainly paying its way in Now Zealand this seascin. Oetigne (by Grafton —Pretty Nell), who has accomplished nothing since his sensational victory over WoTaroi. Batland, Desert Gold and company in the Craven Plate, rim at Rand Wick last October, is reported to he running so well an to lead to the conclusion that he will be in a position to reproduce his best form at the approaching autumn gatherings. Dp to date Cetigne has won states to the value of £22,707. which gites him second place to, Carbine, whose stake earnings amounted to £29,476. Owing to the closing down of racing during the influenza period in New South Wales, turf news was difficult to obtain, and the arrival of Mr W. UKemball’s team in Sydney was featured in several newspapers, ft large amount of space being devoted to the New Zealand horses, photographs and full particulars of their performances and breeding being published. Admitting that the team is n mixed one and some of the horses not of the best flight. scribes find it hard to understand the reason of Mr Kcmball’s, invasion of their country for a declared period of one year. It mav bo news to the Ortmnibnwonlth journalists to learn that Mr Kemball is An Australinn, who landed in' Mabriland in a humble manner. but who presently rose to a rtate of affluence as the result of shrewdness, foresight and some smiles from Dame Fortune. The owner of Hvmesfcra, Nanna. Sfaub,. Scornful, Wishful and Gladful is probably anxious to rsico his useful horses in his own country, hence the invasion which is apparently a to the critics. •' N '
