A social afternoon for the mothers and wives of soldiers is to be given by the Women’s National Reserve ?-on Thursday afternoon, at the Addington trotting grounds, trams leaving Cathedral Square at Ip. All' newly-?,r-rived wives or mothers are cordially invited, and prihted : invitation forms, which can be obtained from tSh office of the Reserve, will entitle the holders to travel free on the cars. The new motor fire engine recently added to the Christchurch Fire Brigade’s plant “went-into action” for the first time last evening. The brigade turned out at about 7.20 p.m. to a fire in an old wooden mill on the Lincoln Road, and the new motor was dispatched to deal with the outbreak. Although it was found unnecessary to use the mtttor pump, thodiigh-pressure supply being. available, the engine was ■given, a thorough trial and proved in every respect satisfactory. Judgment was delivered at Wellington yesterday by the Arbitration Court in a case heard ou February 28, in which Matilda May Walker claimed compensation from Frank Penn owing to the death of her husband, Frank Walker, a linotype operator employed by the defendant. The Oom't held that the_ evidence was amply sufficient to establish the insanity of deceased as a result of an injury to his brain, and that ho had committed suicide. Plaintiff was entitled to full compensation, and judgment would bo for £6OO, with £lB 10s funeral expenses and £lO 10s costs. The ninth annual conference of the New Zealand Poultry Association will ho hold in Christchurch. The opening session will take place in the Caledonian Hall at 11 a.m. on Wednesday. Her Excellency the Countess of Liverpool, the Mayar, Dr Thacker, Mr L. M. Isitt, M.P., and Mr G. Witty, M.P., will give addresses. _ Delegates will be present from practically nil parts of tho Dominion- A field day will be held at Papanui on Wednesday afternoon. On Wednesday evening Mr H. M. Boddiugton, Masterton, will give an address on “ Commercial Unity in the Poultry Industry.” On Thursday evening Mr G. Finn will give a lecture on “The Commonwealth of Man.” On Friday tho delegates will ho entertained at a motor excursion in the forenoon and a garden party at Air J, Riggins’s residence, Burwood, in the afternoon. All the sessions of the conference will he open to poultry enthusiasts. According to officers who returned by the Port Melbourne no great success was attained with the education classes conducted aboard. Lieutenant A. 0. Ponder, Rhodes scholar, of Christchurch,; was director. Ho states that the results were disappointing, mainly owing to tho lack of text books and equipment, and the difficulty of providing classrooms. The instructors were compelled to take classes of sometimes 200 and even 300 men, and as there were on the vessel not more than two text books on any opo subject it was impossible to make much progress. After the first week classes were made optional and an improvement was noted. Many officers interested in the future of the soldiers complained of the. lack of continuity apparent in the educational schemes,at present conducted; and expressed the opinion that a greater effort would have to be made to train men along lines to their desires, and more especially with a view to the occupations they were likely to follow after leaving the army.
