A LINEN SUBSTITUTE.
Textilit. said to be used in twentythree of the largest German factories, is a substitute material that is predicted to he a permanent addition to the textile industry. Ft consists of a paper thread and a- fibre thread twisted together, and. though the percentage of long fibre is very small, it is claimed to have yielded products that the uninitiated cannot distinguish from the former linen and jute fabrics. The fibre gives a firmness that paper fabrics do not possess. The material is made into weaving and sewing yarns and webs of all kinds.

Ciyruthers. of .Sydney, president of the General Conference of the Methodist Church in Australasia, has communicated with Hie, New Zealand Conference, sending greetings and expressing regret, that he can net attend the gathering in _ Christchurch. The epidemic in Australia has necessitated the postponement of the NowSouth Wales and Victorian Conferences, and the annual meeting of the Missions Board. This has serionslv affected the work of the church in-the Commonwealth, Dr Gnrnithers has to he an intermediary between the conferences. He hopes to visit New Zealand later in the year. The New Zealand Conference to-day decided to return his greetings, and to assure him of a warm welcome to this.Dominion.-
