SUMNER’S CARNIVAL
TO-MORROW’S EVENTS. A meeting of the general committed of the Sumner Gala was held in the Council Chambers last night, when/Mr J. B. Lanvenson presided over a full attendance. Correspondence with' the Sumner Band was rend, the secretary stating that the committee’s offer -had- been refused by the conductor that ,morning. Bandmaster Carter explained the position of the band. Mr T. E. Whitfield reported upon negotiations with the Lyttelton Band that afternoon. It was decided to leave the matter, in the hands of Messrs Whitfield and Piercy. Mr Car ter offered _to do his • best ‘ to' point ■ out the . position to his bandsmen. ; Arrangements were made for a supply of hot water from* the, bath house. A letter was received from the town clerk stating that the Mayor had granted the council employees leave of absence in order to assist on Saturday morning. The requests made by’ the committee in connection with the esplanade and pier had also been granted by the Borough. Council. : The secretary stated that the Governor and Lady Liverpool had consented to extend their patronage, to tho gala.. A grant of £lO was made to the Produce Stall. - The Decorations Committee reported matters to bo well in hand. The programme. ,rvith lists of officials, was submitted and.approved, the secretary reporting that the number of entries received constituted a. record. The_ Returned Soldiers’ Club -wrote thanking the committee for the events it had arranged for the men. The chairman stated that in view of the . large number of events, it would be necessary for the officials to concentrate upon their own particular duties d make a. success of the day.
