COAL PROFITS.
PROFITS IN ENGLAND. LONDON, March 4. ... At the first sitting of Sir Maurice Hankey’s Coal Commission, Mr Dickinson, the Coal Controller’s adviser, revealed the fact that the coal owners’ profits for the five years before the war averaged a shilling per ton as compared with Bs 6id in the first eight months of 1918. The price was officially raised to 45.6 d in June, 1918, when the profit became 4s 9 Jd. . Mr Dickinson explained that it was necessary to be very tender towards the Worst; paying collieries. The result of Jh’e increased price was a charge on conriimers of an extra £25,000.000 annually, which went into the pockets of the coal' owners, who did not need it. The . case was based on figures six months, old, and Mr Dickenson admitted that it was unlikely that the increase would have been made if the latter figures had been available.
