Mrs J. P. Luke, 0.8. E., Mayoress of Wellington,, who came to Christchurch for the Rod Cross Conference held last month, has during her visit to the South Island made it her special duty to study the work dono for returned soldiers, especially the orthopaedic department of the various hospitals. Mrs Luke was very much impressed with the work done at the Christchurch Hospital with basket-making, leather work, eorpentering, etc., and in’a talk jvit.h a representative of this paper said that Wellington is to follow onr example and build an orthopaedic ward on exactly the saino lines. While in Dunedin Mrs Luke visited the new hospital there, which is conducted by the Red Cross Society, with a matron and voluntary help. In. Timaru Mrs Luke also visited 1 the soldiers’ hospital, which, she said, is ideally situated. Mrs Luke is a member of the Dominion Rod Cross Executive, and an ardent worker in Wellington. Before leaving for Wellington Mrs Luke will visit the West Coast.
