Mr John Evans, Antigua Street, has been advised that his sou R, (Reg.) Evans is now a released prisoner of war, and arrived at Ripen on December 9.
A Wellington Press Association message states that Colonel J. J. Essen. K.M.G., has been appointed acting-as-sistant on the Public Service Commission He will take up his duties on January 1.
The death occurred at Ivaikonra yesterday of Mr John'-’Peoples, sen., aged eighty-two years. He had resided in Kaikonra for about fifty years, coming to the district from the* West Coast, where he had followed mining pursuits'. He took up land, and was successful as a farmer. The deceased leaves a widow, five sons and four daughters. Two of the sons are expected, from the front shortly. .*
To-day's river report states that all ■he rivers are clear.
