EVENTS OF THE WEEK. . [From Our Correspondent.] THE INFLUENZA EPIDEMIC. The outstanding feature of tho epidemic, wliich has taken a heavy toll in New Brighton during the past fortnight, has been the magnificent selfsacrifice and willing spirit displayed by tho workers in the fight against the scourge. The only business of any note beiug done in the borough radiates from the Council Chambers, whore a relief organisation, under the direction of the Mayor (Mr F. Kibblowhite), is doing splendid work. Reports are receive/! early and late by Messrs Bosomworth and Bishop, and relief dispatched and nursing assistance'arranged for. Nurse Black is doing wonderful work in directing and giving expert assistance. She has, ns far as possible, taken fire place of Dr Stevens, who is a victim of the epidemic^ The Mayor’s subscription list, opened for the relief of families, has been well supported, nearly £IOO having been subscribed. The pressing need of the moment is for nursing assistance and a continual supply of soup.

During the week several deaths have occurred which have served more *than ever to cast ft gloom oyer the borough. Mr J, Eslick was a very well-known figure, and he will be muon missed. Mr Jack Clarke lived for years at “ Brighton House,” George Street, and took an active part in many Brighton 8 affairs. He was ft prominent member of the Golf Club and Money Club, and his death will be regretted by a wide circle of friends. No social function held in Now Brighton in recent years was complete without the presence of Mr Joe Dunn at the piano. He always gave his services cheerfully, and the news of his death came as a great shock to his many friends. His many friends will be glad to know that Mr Era Smith, who has beep dangerously ill, is now on the road to re-1 co verv.
