" ;; As the result of a gala day held recently at Horsley Down, £157 was 'realised for the -Our Day'Fundi--.One of the most interesting features of J tho day was a school Red Cross Copper Trail competition, which was won -by ■tho-Horsley Down. This . resulted in £9O 3s lid. Other schools in the competition were Hurunui, The Peaks, Woodgrove and Medbury. • The competition was very keen, and tho attendance at the fete was good, although the weather .was unpropitious. MrsUoyle and Mr Flesher went from Ohristchurch to represent the Canterbury Red Cross Centre. The Women's Chri'at&n' Temperance .Union met on Wednesday, Mrs T. E. Taylor presiding. A deputation was received from the Lady Liverpool Society, asking tho. union to serve afternoon tea in its own booth at the Show Grounds, on the occasion of tie Lady Liverpool fete on October 5. It was decided to comply with tho request of the deputation, and preliminary arrangements for the work ware made. In connection with the campaign for National Prohibition on the'basis of the Efficiency Board's recommendations, it was arranged that afternoon meetings should be held at the -Art Gallery on October 2," and ai Tennyson Street on October 3, :both/to be addressed by .the Dominion president, Mrs Don. A motion of sympathy was passed with Mrs Wright in the death of her son at the front, meinbers standing- . ;
Yesterday afternoon the scholars and staff of the Sumner Bdrough School met to say an revoir to Miss 6. Brown, who for nearly four years has been acting first assistant., Miis Brown, who was accorded an ovation, was'presented with a silver entree dish and vase by the scholars and staff, and also with a silver vase by the b'oys of her room, Master Dick making a neat speech for tho occasion. In the course of his remarks, the /head master, Mr G. F. Allen, stated/that Miss Brown , had been an influence for good in every department of the children’s lives. The parents trusted he/f, tho children had confidence in her,/ and the staff felt that they wore losing one of the best /of teachers and a) staunch friend. Ho 'i'cad a letter of/apology for absence from the chairn/an, Mr D, Lumsden, who conveyed Uie good wishes of the committee. The/proceedings terminated with three cheers for the recipient. Miss Brown suitably acknowledged the gifts.
