Amongst the enthusiastic supporters of:.the Sumner branch of the Mothers’ Union, few, perhaps, have given move time and thought in the interests of its prosperity than Mrs Cooper, lato of Bury Street. THE GAS LOAN.

The poll taken on Wednesday to raise £IOOO for extensions at the present gasworks, was not, in some respects, the least memorable in the records of the borough. Outwardly the booth wore a business-like appearance, with a large sign conspicuously hung above the doorway, and on the inside the officials waited the attendance of the ratepayers, without much result, up till about three o’clock, when, so it is rumoured, the first vote was recorded.

The public apparently know nothing and cared loss. It is even stated that two councillors had themselves to seek enlightenment upon the cause of tho proceedings. Just before six o’clock, however, a general round-up was made by one or two, and the more interested public, and, shortly afterwards, the returning officer declared the poll carried unanimously in favour of the proposal. Bat he was a visitor, and ignored the good advice tendered. One day he was caught in the act by the conductor, who placed the culprit in charge of the motorman, and said he was going to fetch the constable and a sack. *\Vhile they waited for the arrival of these, the motorman counselled the urchin to think bettor of his actions, for the future, and make the best of his present opportunities by doing a smart hundred yards before the return of the guard.
