Tho occupants of tho other whaler thought that this was accidental and strove to rescue their comrades, but tho submarine then rammed ana smashed it, killing tho captain > and a woman passenger. The submarine then turned and rammed tho debris in order to make sure. The submarine next rammed tho raft several times.

The submarine commander seeing the Lyndiano’s second officer swimming b> the ship, ran Inn. down, the propeller cutting him in pieces. The U-boat then resumed the task of smashing tho obstinate raft, killing and maiming many during tho process. Eventually tbo raft was scattered to pieces and tho submarine disappeared, leaving tbo survivors clinging to tho debris.

Though this attempt to sink without leaving trace failed, only eight of tho stricken survivors were rescued out of forty-six.
