The Star' WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 28, 1918. THE ORTHOPÆDIC UNIT.
Tho proposal to establish tho orthopedic hospital in the Chalmers Ward of the Christchurch Hospital has mot with a sympathetic reception. There were some initial difficulties to bo disposed of, but these were largely overcome by tho acquiescence of Miss Chalmers to the tempo may diversion of tho purpose of tho ward, and tho co-operation of tho Hospital Board. Tho presence in tho city of Colonel Wylie, tho officer in charge of the special unit, brings tho establishment a little nearer, and when the unit itself arrives the work should speedily bo put in hand. We are glad to see that every effort is to bo made to got tho work of tho unit begun at tho earliest possible moment. The purpose of tho hospital is to assist those soldiers who aro incapacitated by injuries to tho limbs, and who by special treatment may bo completely or partially restored to physical fitness. Tho war has been responsible for a very largo number of these cases, and the country would be failing in its duty if it spared any effort to help tho soldiers who have suffered for it. Colonel Wylie has made a special study of the particular work to ho token in hand, and ho is to have the assistance of a specially trained staff and tho necessary modern surgical, electrical and general equipment. Tho work of tho hospital will’be watched with most sympathetic interest, and wo have wo doubt that it will achieve splendid results among the crippled soldiers.
