The ‘Oliatbam Island representative of the "Star,” writing on August 19, sa y s: “an,;u _ -The b-s. ’Himitangi is a total wreck on the "north-west coast of the island'. She arrived at Waitangi on July 27, and after discharging her cargo for that port sailed at 10 p.m. for Kiangaroa. , She struck on the Monau reef near Tupuangi, and lay between two reefs- ‘After a few hours she began to leak and the water rose to above ■the Plimsoll mark. The Himitangi carried a, quantity of stores for Kiangaroa and Owenga. An endeavour was made to salve what was possible from the wreck, but since the heavy gales which followed. the steamer has almost disappeared from view. The Himitangi went ashore on the To One beach in 1911, but was refloated. ' She was the only vessel on the island trade, and it is hoped that there will be another available at an early date, or considerable inconvenience will follow. The relief ship, the Tutanekai, arrived on Monday afternoon, August 19, after being eagerly looked for for over a . fortnight. Captain Thompson and his officers and crew were'taken on board. After landing the mails and cargo she proceeded to Kiangaroa and Owenga, • returning later to Waitanri for passengers. °
