WALKING MATCH.
There was a. revival of a popular oldtime sport in Christchurch this afternoon iu tho walking match from Papanm to Cathedral Square. Tim contest was held on behalf of the Tramway Copper Trail effort for (ho Lady Liverpool Fund. There were fifteen entrants, but only four faced the starter. Tho competitors lined up at the Papanni Supply Stores soon after 2,30 o’clock, and were dispatched amid cheering from a. fairly largo gathering of spectators. Tho contest was keen, and there was very little between the four walkers at tho tape. The result was as follows; F. J. Leggett, scr . . j F. IT. Patterson, Imin . 2 T. Plum sky, Imin . . 3 0. (Sutton, Imin . ’ 4 Tho distance, three miles, was traversed in exactly 25 minutes, a <mod performance. “ The officials were-Starter Mr R Patrick; judge, Mr S. Alpe; handicap per Mr F. Bell; secretary, Air ' ]<] Orchard. Tt is intended to hold another competition next Saturday, whoa another route will be selected, finishing at Eimlish Park. Tho prizes for to-rfav’s race will be presented at a fancy dress hall to bo hold at Panama next Thursday on behalf of tho Copper Trail.
