OUR SAILORS.

—« CHRISTCHURCH GIVES A HELPING HAND. Now Zealand's present prosperity is based upon the intrepid phick of the ‘' men who go down to the sen in ships.” AMiat the sailor's calling entails i n these days of the submarine menace can be imagined in a degree, but no stretch of the imagination can depict the awful sufferings of the survivors of torpedoed ships, left hundreds of miles from the shore in an open boat. They can sink or swim, starve or drown for all the German cares-. But surely wo care, and when the shivering sailor is eventually brought to port, surely we in this prosperous young country will ‘' do onr bit” to assist in feeding him and clothing him, and sending him off to his home. This is the noble work that the British, and Foreign Sailors' Society is doing, and for which -the “Sailors’ Day ” effort is launched. It- may he mentioned that over 22,000 men have been thus assisted, and that thousands of these men were found in the course of a few days once more embarked on their perilous calling, in order that men for the .Army, food for the soldiers and for Britain’s millions shall ho available, when required. There has been a good response locally to the society’s apnoal for £BOOO to help the society, and the Sailors’ Day "’ collection to-morrow .should hpng the amount within easy reach. Those who honour British pluck and endurance will prove it hv contributing their mile in to-morrow’s street collection for a noble cause.
