LIFE-SAVING SOCIETY.

Canterbury Head Centre.

Canterbury Head Centre of the Koval KUe Saving Society met at the Tepid Hatha last Mcning. Air tv. iSassoll, chairman, presided, and about twenty members attended. Mr J. T\yn-Invin moved; "That the new rule regarding resuscitation methods and pioniotion of warmth, as laid down by the Canterbury Surf Association, should bo adopted for competitions, and award examinations should bo rescinded.” He said that the centre did not possess power to bring in « regun 101 i' T c . ontr . ary . regulations o( the nopal Life Saving Society. It wouid be disy°.',’r^?ou? or the centre to depart frolu the Life Saving Society's ” Handbook.' 1 The Surf Association's methods did not give 'sullicient attention to warmth, in competitions all parts of the body should bo warmed, and both hands should bo used, not one only. The strokes should begin at the exlrcmilies and work towards the heart, judges should award points on intelligence shown by resuscitators, rather than on rapiditv oi movements. Mr T\, Miller seconded the motion. A letter was read from Miss L. H. Conley a delegate to the centre, stating that the Kilo Saving Society's " Handbook ” was sufficient, and supporting the rescinding oi the rule. Mr TV. H. Benson said Unit there was friction with the Surf Association and the proposal to rescind the rule was a means ox^ getting at tho association. Iho chairman said that any interference with tho "Handbook.” as inr as awards were concerned, would have to be continued by tho authorities in London. The motion, after a long discussion, was lost, seven voting for it end eight against. The following awards were granted:—Pro-ficiency—-A. Burt, G. F. Tamplin, P. Grant, C. Martin, G. Ormancly, .1, M. Manson. K. T. Kensington, G. E. T. Worthy, TV. H. Hill; bronze medallion—A. Burt, G. F. Tamplin, P. Grant, J. Corbett, C. Martin, G. Ormancly. J. M. Manson; teacher's certificate, S. Haynes; honorary instructor's certificate. S Haynes. Mr Burt, on behalf of the class, presenled Mr Haynes with a hand-bag. in recognition of the able instruction he gave to members. The Now Brighton Surf and Life Saving Club wrote slating that Mr C. It. Miber had been appointed the club's delegate to (lie centre. The appointment was accepted.
