GREAT DAMAGE DONE.

Many Narrow Escapes.

[Per Press Association.] OPOTIKT, April 10. The town has been inundated since early morning by three or lour feet of water. There have been many narrow escapes. Rescue parties have been working all day with horses and boats. Enormous damage has been done to business premises and streets. There have been heavy losses of live stock at Whakatane. ‘ During the twenty-four hours ended 9 a.m. (J. Tin of rain fell here, nearly all during the night. The rivers are running bank high and the lower areas adjacent to the river banks are flooded. Road communication between Taneatua, Waimanu and Opotiki is interrupted.
