* Monthly Meeting.
The Christchurch Fire Board met Inst evening; presentr—Messrs H. Holland (chairman), H, P. Hopkins, G. Kerruish, A. 'Williams and H. R. Rusbridgo. The chairman announced, in connection with Mr J. F. Grierson’s resignation from the board, that it appeared that once lodged it could not be withdrawn, and the notice of resignation bad been forwarded to the Minister, who had fixed the by-election for next Saturday. In the circumstances it was agreed to rescind the resolution asking Mr Grierson to reconsider his resignation. A letter was received from the telegraph engineer, stating that the total length of file alarm circuit; was thirtytwo miles fifty-nine chains, for which the annual maintenance charge of £2 a mile would amount to £65. Consideration of the matter was held over until a reply was received regarding the board's claim for replacing perished iron wire. William. Coward and Co.. Ltd., of London, wrote stating that the board’s order for 2500 ft of hose could not bo filled, as the War Department would not give a shipping permit, owing to the rationing of flax supplies consequent on the failure of supplies from Russia. It was resolved to make a priority shipping claim. Superintendent Warner reported that during March twelve calls were received. four being malicious false alarms The estimated losses were, £2oo, the insurances £ISOO, and the value of properties £2020. Renovations to stations and plant were being carried out by the staff. The discipline and conduct were very satisfactory. The Crystal Palace Theatre, which had been licensed. reflected credit on the management in the matter of fire precautions. The report was adopted.
