WHITE PINE.

Efficiency Conference.

While in Wellington Mr J. A. Frostiek was present at a very representative conl’ercnco of sawmillers, dairying companies, box-making companies and refrigerating companies on the subject of white pine supplies. Mr Frostick stated to-day that undoubtedly the whole question hinged on the Government's policy with regard to afforestation. White pine was the best timber yet discovered for carrying foodstuffs, and particularly butter, and at the present rate of consumption the end of tho timber was in sight, and very much nearer than most, people imagined. It did not seem practicable ■ to leave the white pine trees standing, j as they decayed very rapidly when their I natural surroundings were removed. 1 There were so many points involved) in the discussion, Mr Frostick said, that j the National Efficiency Hoard determined to take time to consider and to collect additional evidence before making a report on the subject. Certain suggestions had been made, and he believed that the committee of the Saw-| millers’ Federation w as still considering v them with a view to meeting the difficulty, as far as possible,, from a national ( standpoint.
