* EVENTS OF THE WEEK. [From Ocb Correspondent.] ELECTRIC LIGHT. The official turning on of the electric current for street lighting in New Brighton took place on Tuesday evening. The ceremony took place from a pole on the Esplanade near the Cafe, the current being turned on by the Mayoress of New Brighton (Mrs Kibblers lute). Maori Tea Rooms, where a brief toast list was gone through. The Mayor,(Mr Kihblowhitc) said the present times were too anxious lor them to go through a long toast I'M. He referred with pride to the gallant stand our men wore making in France The Mayor of Christchurch (Mr H. Holland) and Mr J. A. Flesher replied to the toast of “The Christchurch City Council, and Messrs W. H. Bellamy. C M Intyre, C. H. Winny- and A. H. to the toast of il Past JJayors and Councillors of the New Brighton Borough Council.” Very favourable comment has been passed upon Hie lighting The lights are on until about hj a.rn., as agaiiiiat the earlier turning off of the gas Tights, ijnd the fact that the gas was almost entirely off for eight municipal moonlight nights every month. The installation of the newest form of lighting marks a great step forward in' Hie progress of the borough, and all concerned are to bo heartily congratulated upon the change. GRAND BENEFIT CONCERT. A first-class concert will be given by the Christchurch Commercial Travellers and Warehousemen’s Concert Party in the Joy land Theatre next Wednesday. The entire piocceds are to be gliven to the widow and five children, of the late Mr F. Swanston. Apart from the artistic merit of the concerts given by the travellers, it should he remembered that the object in this case is a most worthy one. * PERSONAL. Mrs Evelyn Clark, who is spend ng a month or two in the North Island, paid a flying visit to Brighton last week, and left again on Thursdav evening. Mr and Mrs George Brown, of Hawke Street, are spending a holiday in Wellington. PERSONAL. Mr and Mrs Hopkins, of Lonsdale Street, received the sad news on Thursday afternoon of the death of their son. Lieutenant Vivian Phelps Hopkins, of the Rifle Brigade, who wv.s killed in action in France. This is the second war bereavement the family have sustained ns another son. Corporal Hopkins, was killed on Gallipoli. FAREWELL TO REV C. STRAND. The Rev C. Strand, who is leaving for Taranaki, was farewelled by the officers and congregation of the Mothodist Church on Wednesday evening, Mr F. H. Christian presided. Mr F. Thompson, on behalf of the congregation, presented the departing minister with a cheque for a substantial amount. Regret was expressed at Mr Strand’s departure, and good wishes expressed for his future welfare. • A social evening was then spent and refreshments

handed round. The Rev W. Walker, who has just returned from the front (invalided home), after spending two years there, takes up the position rendered vacant by the Rev C. Strand’s departure. The Rev Walker, prior to going on active service, was a successful preacher at Edgeware Road, Wellington, and at the Dunedin Central Mission. MOTOR BOAT RACING. The first race for the Rowland trophy was got off last Saturday and resulted as follows-Mr E. Archbold’s Wanganui 1, Mr G. Farrar’s Maranui 2, Mr L. Lawrence’s Miehief 3. Pnriri, Whitewitch, Halcyon and Ngaire also started. The first four boats finished within 29sec of each other, The next test will be hold to-day. BOWLING. In the final ot the handicap singles, played last Saturday, Stokes heat Grn-, ham. The final of the rink matches will be played next week. - Beaumont’s rink in the Easter tournament did very well, winning throe games. ___________
