SKIPPER’S £7OOO A YEAR.

Best Furs for Wives.

“Some Grimsby skippers this year hare paid income tax on £6OOO to £7OOO and over,” remarked Mr Tickler, M.P. for Grimsby, when referring to the prosperity of the fishing industry recently. “ There have been cases where as much as £SOO nas been earned in a fortnight. The skipper, of course, gets £lO out of every £IOO made on a trip, and with the fixed prices for fish, locally known as ‘ famine prices,’ earnings are not likely to diminish. “ The wives of skippers wear the best furs and the finest diamonds, and they have nest eggs in the shape of M’ar Bonds. “ One trawler owner has judged prospects to be so favourable that he has bought up fishing vessels all along the coast and has at least £300,000 invested in this kind of craft. “ Despite the dangers and U-boats there is no shortage of men for the trawlers, and this is not surprising having regard to the handsome remuneration. “Taken all in all Grimsby market has a better supply of fish than two years ago,”
