OBITUARY.

PETER- DRUMMOXD. Mr Peter l.h'umm.ond, one of the oldest, most widely known and most s>uceosslul l armors in the Ashbnrron district, diet) in the Ashbiirton Hospital on Saturday morning after having undergone a. second serious internal operation. Mr Drummond, wh.o was born iu Stirlingshire, Scotland, arrived in .New Zealand in the late sixties, and shortly altenvards started farming at Banksidc, where he resided for about ten years. Me then moved across the Rakaia river and took up land in tjho Lauriston district, and soon became ,o;.ie ol the most successful farmers in thai, locality. Seventeen years ago be bought from Mr .1. C. \\ the well known Corwar Estate., 011 the southern hanks of the Rakaia, and made that his permanent home. During his long residence there, he va.stfy improved the property in many ways. He was by nature, a clever mechanical engineer and carried ,out many important works about the bomeste.id, including the installation of an electric plant both for lighting and power. He also made full use of the water for power for driving machinery for corn crushing, seed cleaning, chaff cutting and s,o on, and carried out some important drainage works. As a. fanner he. was a past master in all its branches, and bis thoroughly sound practical advice was often sought and acted upon by others. In the early days he was an exhibitor of Border Leicester sheep at the Ashburton Agricultural and Pastoral Association s fallows, and was also a member of the society. He established a flock of Border Leicester.*) in 1887. Tie formerly held a seat on the Mount Hutt Road .Board, and was for a, time a member .of the. La.nriston School Committee. Tie was of a most genial and kindly disposition and in his quiet, unostentatious way did innumerable acts of genuine kindness. About twelve years ago be paid a visit to the Old Country in company with his old friend, Mr Andrew M'Farlane, and made good use of the knowledge he gained wTiile on his travel's. About three weeks ago he was obliged to enter the hospital, where he underwent the operations. ITe leaves a crown-up family of six sons and four daughters.
