MILITARY SERVICE.

SECOND CANTERBURY BOARD. Tho Second Canterbury Military Service Board met to-day at- Government Buildings: present—Mr H. J. •Beswick (chairman), Mr H. G. Rich and Mr F. T. Eldridge. Major Grc-sson was the military representaIX WRONG CLASS. .Lewis A'lfred Agassiz, linotype operator, Stanmoro Road, appealed on tho ground that he should be in Class B of the Second Division, he having one child, who was born in 190-1. The appeal was allowed. Arthur Kirk Hart, clerk, Linwood, claimed to be in Class C, Second Division, ho having two children. His appeal was allowed. Appellant:; will be included in the feßllots for their proper class of reservists. AX AUSTRALIAN'S CLATM. The adjourned appeal was taken of Percy Mansfield Hamilton (Mr Cassidy), linesman. Christcluirch, who claimed not to be a reservist, as he KV3.S a native of Victoria. Mr Beswick referred to the opinions expressed by the Solicitor-General on domicile and residence. Mr Cassidy said that the appellant had enlisted in Victoria but had to withdraw. His two brothers had also enlisted, one being killed. Appellanteame to New Zealand in November, 1915, for the benefit of his wife's health. He was married in October, 1915. Mr Cassidy referred to the decision in the case of Mr E. -T. WattMr Beswick said that the board could not be bound bv the decisions of a North Island Board. The case of Mr [Wait,'moreover, was different from the present one. George Joseph. Fagan (Mr .Mills), mechanic, who hud ciliated, hub was turned down, appealed on the grounds of hardship. The appeal \s\\a dismissed, but ho was allowed till March 1.

C. Seton Kellaway, managing director of Smith and Smith Sawmilling Company, said that the appellant was absolutely essential to the business owing to his high technical knowledge. Mr Hum- said thnt -iV. the appellant's brothers were married and had families, Tho appeal was adjourned for Hirer- months. ■Richard Andrew Mould (Mr I'desher), farmer. Puaha, whose appeal had been referred to the Efficiency said that he did not receive notice of the re-hearing of his appeal until too late, Tho appeal was adjourned sine dio. DISMISSED. James Alexander Lowo (Mr "Walton), engineer's assistant-, Heathcote, was appealed for by his employer, J. .J. Matthews, millovner, Rangiora. At present Lowe is in the CI camp. After hearing the evidence of the employer, Mr Beswiek said that the appeal would be. dismissed. C2. The appeals of the following were adjourned sine die, the appellants being classed as C2: —George Horace Orton, cook, Lyttelton: Sidney George Rayfield, driver, Christ church. MISCELLANEOUS.

William Charles Frederick Hill, gardener, Oxiey Street, appealed on the ground that ho " would not kill, or aid, or abet in the taking of human ilife." He made no appearance and the appeal was dismissed The appeal of -lames Leonard Davis, assistant surveyor, was further adjourned sine die, he heing a pupil at tho Canterbury Aviation School, on the understanding that he completed the courso of training. Tho appeal on behalf of Archibald Ely Smith, machinist, Christchurch, on the ground that ho was under military age. was allowed. Captain Pilkington was the Military Representative. SECOND DIVISION CASES. Duncan Gillanders (Mr Wright) appealed on the grounds that he was in Class B of the Second Division when called up. Appellant had a wife and child. Tlie chairman stated that in this cla*s identification proof would be required to be submitted. The Court uphold the appeal, subject to certain conditions being complied with. Frank Barnes (Kai&poi) claimed to be in Ola*;- C of tho Second Division when called up. A brother was at the front, and appellant's fafhor was partially crippled and unable to do farm work except of a light character. The board decided to allow time umil tho March draft. Albert Stanley Barker (Mr Van Asch). farmer, Loburn. was granted leave .rill March.

The appeal of Ernest Charles Hassall (.Air Van Aseb), farmer, Clarkvillo, was also adjourned till March. Walter Armstrong limiting (Mr Van A sell), farmer. Woodend, classed CI. appealed on the ground that h<> was the only occupant of a farm on his mother's behalf. Time was allowed till .March. John Fleming (Mr Van. Ascli), farmer, Cheviot, appealed on behalf of his son. Archibald " David Fleming, -who was stated to be the only son left to carry out farm duties. A brother was at the front. The case was adjourned till March. Leonard Walter Champion (Mr Van Aseh, farmer. Cust, -appealed on behalf of Arthur Honey, one of two permanent men employed on bis farm, the second man hir,*.? partially eriurdod. The ease was adjourned till March. Harper (Mr Orc.sson). farmer, Clarkville, appealed on behalf of his son, Geoffrey Harper, who was the only one to help him on his farm- Witness stated that he was seventy years of age and his wife was sixty-eight. He had live sons, four of whom were married. Two of these had served in the Navy during the war. One married son/at Invcrcargill, was prepared to go to the war. The case was adjourned for a report from the 'Efficiency Board. The cases of James Miles and Harry Miles (Mr Gresson), engaged in farming operations, were adjourned until next March. APPEALS UPHELD.

Thomas Usher Langley, farm labourer, Cust. annealed on the ground that he was in Class C of the Second Division when he was called up. BEFERRFD TO EFFICIENCY BOARD. The case of Thomas Cross Butcher (Mr Papprill), fellmonger. Kaiapoi, was referred to the Efficiency Board, it being .stated that appellant was engaged ia the, wool trade, employed seven hands, and was doing work for the Imperial Government. REPORT TO BE MADE, Bertram Gordon Saurderson (Mr Wright). shearer. Amherley, applied for a rehearing. It was stated his case had been before tho Otago Board, and tho appeal dismissed- He had, however, been engaged rabbit-trapping, and had not received the notice to attend the Otago sitting until the day following the hearing of the appeal. Tho chairman said the board could hardly interfere, but as appellant was unable to go to Otago at present, his evidence would be taken. Appellant detailed work he had done, to show that his services necessary to tho country. The chairman said a. recommendation would be made, to the proper authorities. It Mas considered, however, that appellant should* go with tho March draft. DECISION POSTPONED.

Mary Skinner, Cheviot, appealed for extension of leavo for her son, Malcolm Bruce Skinner, twenty years, who had appealed and since gone into camp. "Witness stated that she could not carry on lift - farm without her son's assistance. Her husband was unable to do any heavy work, and a second son was only eleven years old- , Witness asked for exemption or for extension of leave until after harvest, when she would havo to give up grain-growing. Mr Evans said the son would probably be allowed time until after harvest. His appeal papers would require to bo perused, and the case would stand over in the meantime.
