SECOND CANTERBURY APPEAL BOARD. SITTINGS AT CHRI3TCHURCH. The No. 2 Canterbury Military Ser«< vice Board met at Christohuroh this afternoon; present—Messrs H. W. Bishop, S.M. (chairman), M. G- Rich and F- T Eldridge. Major Gresson represented the military authorities. CONSCIENTIOUS OBJECTORS. Arthur Boddington, dairyman, 53, YVhitclaw Avenue, appealed on ground* of religious objections, being a member of the Christadelphian denomination, in his written-appeal appellant stated that he was not an ''immersed believer," but it would violate his religious faith if he undertook any duty requiring him to swear allegiance to any other than Jesus Christ. " All nonsense," remarked the chairman, add-* ing that appellant was not properly a member of the denomination. The ap< peal was dismissed, appellant declining to sign the formal agreement to undertake non-combatant service. Later appellant agreed to sign the •u.ndferta-k----ing, and the hoard undertook to make a recommendation accordingly. John Brighton, linesman, 91 4'Moorhouse Avenue, applied for a rehearing of his appeal. His original grounds of appeal were on a religions basis, ho being a, Christadelphian. The chairman read the form of agreement to undertake non-combatant service, and appellant said he was willing to sign it. Tho appeal was allowed.

West Oxford, applied for a re* hearing of his appeal on financial grounds. The board decided that no fresh evidence was before it, and refused the rehearing. * SLAUGHTERMAN'S APPEAL. The Canterbury Frozen Meat Company appealed on behalf of John Aitcliison. slaughterman. 70, Sawyer's Road. Papanui. on the ground of the essential nature of Aitchieon's occupation. After hear; ing the evidence of N. L. Macbeth, sec* retary of the comoany. the board ad-, journed the appeaT sine die, the case ta be reviewed when the First Division is exhausted. SHEARERS' APPEALS. Arthur Brown, sheare: and miner t Wnverlev Boarding House. Christ' church (Mr F. K. Hunt), appealed ov grounds of the essential nature of hit occupation. The chairman remarked that the Pastoralists' Association denied that the number of shearers in the country was necessary. After hearing _ evidence, the board granted a sine die adjournment, subject to review.' Moses Partridge B. Brown., shearer! 331. Moorhouse Avenue (Mr F. Iv. Hunt), appealed on similar grounds. After perusing documentary evidenea and hearing appellant's statement, thtf board adjourned the hearing sine diet subject to review. SECQND DIVISION. Edward Thomas Bickerstaff, plasterer. 315, Madras Street, produced a certificate of enrolment in the Second Division, and his appeal was allowed. OVER AGE. Edward Kennedy, trade union secretary, Trades Hall, Christchurch," appealed on grounds that lie was over military age. Appellant said he could not produce ? birth certificate. His age was fifty* six. and .lie was so. far over the age that hp had thought his appearances would bp conclusive evidence. He had not the slightest inclination to go to the war. as he could see war enough in New Zealand. Major Gresson di<J rot press for evidence, and the appeal was allowed. LEAVE GRANTED. The C. Jitcrburv By-Products Company appealed on behalf of James John Keene, engine-driver, 45, O'Brien's Road. A. A. M'Kellar appeared for the company and asked for leave for two months"to enable the company to replace Keene. Leave was granted till September 17. A personal appeal by Keene was then considered, and leave was extended till October 17. SEAMEN'S APPEALS. James Armstrong, seaman, 160. Sawyer's Road, Papanui, appealed on grounds of occupation. Appellant stated that he was employed on a troopship. The appeal was adjourned9ine die. Thomas King, marine fireman, Sailors' Home, Lyttelton, did not appear. The board adjourned the appeal sine die, as a matter of policy.
