The Canterbury Antomobil© Assad*-] tion met la«t night, Mr A. S. Clark-j son presiding. j It was resolved to forward a letter of condolence to the relatives of the late Mr A. H. Turnbull. Tile City Council forwarded a letter that was received from the Mackenzie County Council soliciting support with reference to a resolution passed by the council in regard to the question of j taxing motor-car and motor-cycle! tyrea- I Mr Johnston said the proposal was a feasible one. It would be a good proposition to tax motor tyres in order to aid in the upkeep of roads. No motorist, ho was sure, would j res out n. moderate taxation for that j purpose. Ho considered, however, j that the time was premature for such j taxation and moved a resolution to j the effect that the local bodies should j make some move in tho matter before j the association dealt with it. ]
Tho motion was carried and the j secretary was instructed to communicate with the council to that effect. ( A letter was received from the Min- j ietor of Internal Affairs, congratulat- j tug the Motor Carnival Committee on j keeping the expenses of the rafflo so ; low. namely £2l 3s 3d. ; Mr G. D. Macfarlane wrote in refer- j ence to the Mitchell motor-car which he | had offered, for conveying soldiers, from | Culverdeii to Hanmer. Jle stated) that when the car was finished for that) j purpose he desired that it should he j sold -or raffled on behalf of tho Red' j Cross or invalided soldiers. j it was resolved to forward to Mr j Macfarlane a letter conveying a hearty vote of thanks from the association for j his generous offer, which was accepted, i The financial statement showed the j receipts to have been £1077 17s 6d j and the expenditure £loo2 lis sd. j The Red Cross art union had realised j £1027 10s. Accounts amounting to: £'3sl 16s 6d were passed for payment, j Included in that amount was the sum j of £33.5, being payment for a motorcar, provided by members for the Red Cross motor carnival raffle. j It was decided to donate £25 to tho i ,<t John Ambulance Association, to- j wards the cost of a motor ambulance, j The secretary- (Mr C- W. Hcrvey) de- j tailed the arrangements made for the j orphans' outing to be held on March, j 24. He mentioned that the Sumner j Deaf and Dumb Institute would be un- j able to participate, owing to sick-j aess at that institution. j Mi- Johnston brought up the matter j of forming a private insurance com- j pany for the purpose of insuring tho j cars of members of the association. j Mr "ohnston then moved that the j committee approve of the report of the j Motor Sub-committee in regard to the i matter and authorise the sub-corn-j mittee to take the necessary steps to j form a mutual company to be regis- i tered under The Companies Act, j 1908. i
