THE R.M.S. MAITAI.
ASSISTANCE* TAHITI. (Special to the "Star.") DUNEDIN, December 28. The mishap to the R.M.S. Maiiai a.t Rarotonga (where she dragged hex anchors and went on the reef) occurred at midnight on December 25. The vessel had arrived that day from Papeete and was taking hi fruit when the cables parted. The anchorage is not far out. The Maitai left San Francisco on December 7, one day late, carrying 1.5 first-class, 14 second-class and 14. thirdclass passengers,, and 900 tons of cargo for Wellington. She may have landed or taken on passengers at Papeete. The company has chartered the steamer Cholita to go to tho Maitai's assistance. She left Tahiti last night and will probably take two days and a half to get to Rarotonga. (The Cholita is a small steamer, a little over 300 tons. She is owned by the French Oceanic Phosphates Company, of Tahiti.)
