LOCAL AND GENERAL.
Staff-Sergeant Hall, of tho Awapuni Camp, arrived' in Christ-church to-day. All the Canterbury trout streams wero reported clear at 9 a.m. to-day. Sergeant-Major Houston, of the hospital ship Marama, passed through to J>unedin on final leave to-day.
At tho Lyttelton Police Court to-day, before Mr L. A. Stringer, J.P., a first offender for drunkenness was fined 10s and costs.
Mrs G. V. Leeming, of Nortb Avon Road, has received a cable from her husband, Captain Looming, stating that lie has been operated on for a wound in the abdomen and in progressing splendidly.
The figures issued by the Labour Department for the week ending October 7 show that during that period fourteen married and sixteen single men have applied for work. Of the-se one has been engaged in Government employment and one in private employment. Work is still required for twenty-five men. Private- work is very quiet, but twelve good men are required for work on the Parnesdus-Kaikoura Road. There are also vacancies for a number of experienced men in theOtira tunnel. Single men are required for tho Fire Brigade. Among the places visited by Mr W. H. Taylor, a visiting horticulturist, was the estate of 31 r T. W. Adams, at Greendale. This place is of great interest because of the large extent of the plantations. Mr Taylor says ho is greatly indebted to Mr Adams for his kindness and hospitality. Tho plantations are probably unique in the Dominion on account of the very largo n'umber of varieties of forest trees they comprise, and are of great value, not only from the utility but also from the educative point of view. Material for identification and value of a very large number of trees could be. obtained there.
The Canterbury branch of the Lady Liverpool Depot has dispatched 6000 Christmas parcels for the Canterbury soldiers in France,, and ten cases of balaclavas, scarves and mittens tor winter use. In addition to these fourteen cases of parcels have been sent to the men in Ivgypt, and (3000 puddings, made in London, have also been sent to France. In order to supply the men with fruit £2OO has been cabled for tho men in France, and £SO for those in Egypt. Various articles have also been sent for the use of the men of the Eighteenth Reinforcements on the* voyage. The appeal made by Capam Richardson for bowls, for the men in Samoa, resulted in twenty-two bowls being forwarded to the depot, and these havo been sent on.
